To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS families and communities in Northern Ontario continue to suffer devastating and preventable injuries and loss of life on Highway 69;
WHEREAS successive governments have promised to complete the four-laning of HWY 69, yet since 2018 not a single kilometre of the remaining 68 km’s has been tendered for construction and no provincial funding has been allocated in the last eight provincial budgets to advance this project;
WHEREAS the Premier himself has acknowledged the dangers of the remaining two-lane sections of Highway 69, stating: “Have you ever gone from Sudbury down to the city? That two-lane is like white-knuckle driving down there. If the transport is off by two inches, you’re done.”, and
WHEREAS Highway 69 is a vital transportation corridor that supports Northern Ontario families, businesses, tourism, and economic development.
WE, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to: immediately fund and tender the remaining 68 kilometres of Highway 69 for construction, begin work without further delay and establish a clear, public timeline for the completion of the four-laning of Highway 69.
