To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS Bill 6, the Safer Municipalities Act, falls short of meaningfully addressing the housing and homelessness
crisis, and doubles down on expensive failed policies that will cost taxpayers more while making things worse;
WHEREAS everyone deserves to enjoy parks and public spaces, and have access to a safe, affordable, dignified home;
WHEREAS tents and prisons are not acceptable replacements for safe, affordable and dignified housing, and
WHEREAS the best way to end encampments is to create new supportive housing units, allowing people living in
encampments or the shelter system to move into a safe, permanent affordable home, while connecting them to
mental healthcare, addiction treatment and other ongoing supports.
Therefore, we the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to take immediate action on the housing
and homelessness crisis by:
- Building thousands of supportive housing units to move people from tents to safe and affordable homes.
- Reinstating real rent control, doubling ODSP/OW, and providing housing benefits to those at greatest risk of
imminently losing their housing. - Expanding access to low-barrier addiction treatment programs.
